The Accurate Early Orthodontic Treatment
Abstract
Currently, in Taiwan, due to the popularity of myofunctional correction devices and the marketing promotion of invisible correction devices for children, most parents opt to have their children undergo so-called early orthodontic treatment. The timing of early orthodontic treatment has been a continuous topic of debate, given various perspectives on orthodontic treatment. However, none of these viewpoints have been able to convincingly address the issues associated with early orthodontic treatment.
Clinically speaking, is there such a thing as precise early orthodontic treatment? The answer is quite clear: no. Early orthodontic treatment can only be deemed appropriate or correct for early orthodontic treatment.
In essence, children aged twelve to fourteen, regardless of gender, may still be in their growth and development phase. This stage is generally considered the late mixed dentition period. Initiating treatment during this period cannot be strictly categorized as early orthodontic treatment. Early orthodontic treatment should be defined as treatment received by children aged twelve or younger, or possibly nine or younger.
Given the absence of precise early orthodontic treatment, we can still, through different diagnostic approaches, understand the etiology of malocclusion and provide the best orthodontic approach to achieve the precise clinical treatment objectives. Therefore, this presentation will cover topics such as scholarly arguments regarding early orthodontic treatment, the timing of intervention, and suitable conditions for early orthodontic treatment, including preventive or interceptive orthodontics. It is hoped that by sharing this content, we can provide the best approach to early orthodontic treatment for children.
